Acne, Rosacea, and the Ocean: The Real Story Behind Kelpology

Why I Started Kelpology: A Journey from Clinical Science to the Healing Power of the Sea
"It’s funny how when we are drowning, we go to the ocean to breathe."
I’ve heard that quote before, and it resonates with me on a cellular level. For as long as I can remember, the ocean has been my sanctuary. I wasn't just drawn to its beauty or its mystery—I was drawn to its energy. The sound of the waves, the vastness of the horizon; being near the water is the only thing that truly helps me de-stress.
But my journey to the ocean wasn't just about peace; it was about survival.
The Struggle Behind the Surface
For most of my life, I struggled with acne. It wasn't just a skin concern; it was something that dictated how I felt about myself. I was a "woman of science"—a nurse by background and a Senior Program Manager in the pharmaceutical industry—so I approached my skin the only way I knew how: with clinical protocols.
I tried everything. Proactiv helped, but left my skin dull and stripped of its natural barrier. Antibiotics gave me temporary relief, but the acne always returned. Finally, I was told that Accutane was the answer. I stood on the precipice of that decision—I had the appointment booked, the blood work scheduled—but I chickened out. There was something in my gut, a quiet voice of hesitation, that told me there had to be a better way than harsh, systemic intervention.
Finding Balance: From Chemicals to Nature
I began to pivot. I started experimenting with natural alternatives—emu oil, shea butter, charcoal soap. My skin didn't just calm down; it began to thrive.
Then, in 2024, I was diagnosed with rosacea. It was a new challenge that required me to be even more intentional. I had to learn the language of my skin, identifying what triggered a flare-up—even something as simple as warm water—and what brought it back to equilibrium. Through a combination of specific clinical treatments (like my Finacea 15%) and a very disciplined, nature-derived approach, I finally found my glow.
Why Kelpology?
So, why seaweed? Why kelp?
It’s simple: I believe in the marine benefits of these ingredients. They aren’t just "trendy" botanicals; they are nutrient-dense powerhouses that respect the skin’s biological needs.
I’ve learned that the beauty industry often sells us a fantasy: If you buy this, you will have skin like hers. But as someone with a background in both nursing and pharma, I know the truth—and it’s the reason I started Kelpology.
Our skins are not the same. You cannot force your skin to react to a product the way someone else’s does. Your skin has a unique history. Instead of looking for a miracle cure, we need to focus on providing our skin with the essentials it actually needs to function.
Kelpology isn’t about selling you a "cure" for your face. It’s about sharing the journey of understanding your skin’s biology and providing the high-quality, marine-infused essentials that support your unique needs.
I’m so excited to share this process with you—from the science behind the infusion oils to the ritual of the application. We’re going to get to the "why" of your skin health together.
Welcome to the tide.
